Chief Financial Officer Austin, TX

Directs financial planning, financial record keeping, financial reporting and cash management for the organization.  As a member of the senior management team is responsible for the development of Company strategies and philosophy.


ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. These are functions that a person must be able to perform in the job, either unaided or with the assistance of a “reasonable accommodation”. The essential function should be related to the overall job purpose, done with great frequency, cause severe consequences if omitted and cause difficulty if reassigned. The job would be fundamentally altered if the essential duty were removed.

  • Responsible for the direction & review of all monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements, including the annual statutory statement for two companies. Also reviews the internal financial statements for two product lines.
  • Responsible for the direction & review of the annual financial planning project, which includes all departmental budgets and forecasting of future years' operating results.

  • Analyzes financial data to identify current and future operating trends and to locate problem areas. Recommendations for possible solutions to various business problems are also necessary on an ongoing basis.

  • Responsible for the direction and review of the preparation of all monthly, quarterly, and annual reports to reinsurers. Participates in the annual reinsurance renewal process by supplying requested financial data to reinsurers and recommending enhancements to our programs.

  • Responsible for the direction & review of the annual license renewal filing process for all states, including the filing of premium tax returns and all required data forms for both companies.

  • Responsible for the direction & review of the administration of all Sarbanes-Oxley activities for the Company.

  • Responsible for audit relationships with the CPA firm, reinsurers, and state examiners.

  • Plans the company's operating cash needs.  Responsible for all banking relationships.

  • Directs the payment of all Company expenses, claim payments, and general obligations.

  • Responsible for the review of all federal tax accruals and the annual completion of all income tax records.

  • Reviews contingent commission calculations for all agents, including the Premier Agent Program.

  • Responsible for the oversight of all payroll activities.

  • The above-noted responsibilities are administered through an Accounting Department that currently has 11 employees, including two Assistant Treasurers.

ADDITIONAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

         Responsible for the Premium Audit & Premium Collections Department, which includes the process of auditing all appropriate liability policies, computation of all additional premium endorsements resulting from those audits, and the collection thereof.  Additional duties include the handling of bad debt audits and the resolution of problems with insured and agents resulting from auditing activities. there are currently 17 personnel in this department, including the Manager.

  • Responsible for directing the collection of all premium balances from agents.

         Performs an active role in Company real estate activities, including building construction, maintenance, and leasing activities.  Directs the Facilities, Data and Procurement Department (FDP), a staff currently of four employees, including an Assistant Vice President.

         Performs a key role in all Company IT system conversions.

         Other duties and projects as assigned.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES

Carries out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the organization's policies and applicable laws. Responsibilities include interviewing, hiring, and training employees; planning, assigning, and directing work; appraising performance; rewarding and disciplining employees; addressing complaints and resolving problems.

QUALIFICATIONS

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE

Requires a Bachelor of Science in Accounting and a CPA certification. A Masters Degree in Accounting or an MBA is helpful but not required. Previous experience in an insurance company at a level of Controller or higher is required with at least 10 years of tenure.

 

LANGUAGE SKILLS

Communication skills, which allow interaction with others in a professional manner, both verbal and written.

Ability to read, analyze, and interpret common scientific and technical journals, financial reports, and legal documents. 

Ability to respond to common inquiries or complaints from customers, regulatory agencies, or members of the business community. 

Ability to write speeches and articles for publication that conform to prescribed style and format.  Ability to effectively present information to top management, public groups, and/or boards of directors.

REASONING ABILITY

Must possess strong analytical and interpersonal skills.

Ability to apply principles of logical or scientific thinking to a wide range of intellectual and practical problems. 

Ability to deal with nonverbal symbolism (formulas, scientific equations, graphs, musical notes, etc.,) in its most difficult phases. 

Ability to deal with a variety of abstract and concrete variables.

Ability to manage and direct difficult discussions and handle problem situations.

CPA Certification.
